My life is like Cinderella’s. I started work when I was just 8 years old and I often went to bed hungry. I had to work to get through college. And it seems it was always hard to make ends meet.
But I had dreams. We need dreams to give us ambition and hope. I learned that to make those dreams come true we have do something. It is no good complaining. We have to take action. We have to make things happen.
I must have done something right. I have a comfortable living. I have a supportive husband and a wonderful family. I have great friends. I have a wonderful life. And yet, I still have dreams. Only today, my dreams are not so much for myself. I dream of a better world. And, as I said, to make dreams come true we have to take action. So:
I established my own charity to help the less fortunate. I teach them to have dreams, and to take action to help themselves. Of course, this might not be easy for them, so I provide education and livelihood job training schemes to help them on their way. I think this is one of the greatest gifts we can give a person.
I am active in Zonta and Soroptimists, ladies organizations whose advocacy is helping women and children. I work with Freemasons (the largest charitable group in the world) to help them organize humanitarian missions and outreach programs. And in the search for peace and harmony I worked with displaced communities, bridging Christians and Muslims.
I am sure you have already guessed what my message is going to be. It is that we all — every one of us — must have dreams. And we must take action to make things better. Everyday, ask yourself, what did I do today to make my dreams come true, and to make the world a better place. Trust me, it works. Together we can make a better future for ourselves, our children, and the world.
